it's travelling but not as we know it

god, this is a much more complicated way of travelling, looking for work and all that. have just spent the last hour finding out about wwoofing opportunities in hostels in melbourne so i don't have to pay rent but it turns out that i can only really organise that when i get there. i've also been looking at employment agencies and possible jobs. it's a right 'mare. i want to get a proper job but i'm not sure there's much chance of that if i'll only be working for a couple of months. so then i need to think about whether not to use my (already purchased) bus pass and just stay in melbourne the whole time but then that would only be to work for another month and i'll not see much of australia. hmm.. so perhaps that's not sensible. the options, the options. i'll probably end up in a call centre. argh! god, and i've also to work out my c.v. i've not even seen anything of sydney yet. in fact, neither has most people in my hostel. we're all working or looking for work. bur-luddy hell.

though i did go down to the harbour last night. the queen mary2 was there which, apparently, is 'the largest thing on water' according to a bloke i was stood next to. there was also rumour that the qe2 was there too but that was round the other side of the harbour and i couldn't be bothered finding out. they had fireworks and everything. it was quite nice standing there and thinking 'hmm, i'm at sydney harbour watching fireworks'. that's what you pay your money for, isn't it?

I'm just reading the Independent before I get down to some work!!!! and there in front of me on page 27 is a picture of the QE2 sailing through Sydney Harbour past the QM2 'on its way to dock at Circular Quay at dusk yesterday' (20 Feb which is the morning of 20 Feb GMT). I'll have to cut it out to show Mum. It says that the QM2 is 'the world's largest ocean liner', so that's official then if the Independent says so!

But there's no pictures of the fireworks, maybe I'll have a Google later, to find a Sydney newspaper website.

Wow, what excitement down under! The QE2 and the QM2 both in Sydney Harbour at the same time since 1941, when the originals visited during the war! Wow!

Yes, that means your dad has spent half the morning Googling the Sydney newspapers, particularly the Sydney Morning Herald, but really, its like you being in America all over again, with videos, etc, of the goings on yesterday. Seems like it caused all sorts of problems, upsets, little old ladies getting locked in the City Gardens, the Australian Prime Minister having to apologise for not being ready and prepared for it all, etc.

And on top of all that, the Us Vice President is visiting the place tomorrow, what with streets being closed, it even advised people to keep away from Sydney till the weekend, are you sure you want to stop there? Mind you, could be an interesting experience! Australia at its most exciting, watch out for the demonstrations and the protests though.

By the way, your Mum has got me videoing Top Gear off the TV, she says you liked watching it last year, so when you get back, you'll have a tape of six episodes of it to watch, look forward to it! Oh, and Louis Theroux was on, so I video'd that for you. Just thought you might want to know!
