it's striking me that most of my friends have moved in with, or are already living with, boys. especially recently. how has this happened? i leave the country and then it all sneaks up on me. i'll get home and everyone has settled into coupledom and i'll be left there with only my pint to tell about my travelling tales. am i missing the boat, being out here? you all have to promise to humour me when i get back.
so the flash apartment thing fell through. though there are plenty of flash apartments here so another one will come along in a minute. but then i saw an ad for a cheap room just outside the city. again, it was with a boy. so i had a look last night and it's actually quite nice. it's a fairly small terraced house but quite clean and modern. the guy is studying for a masters and seems as normal as can be expected. but he said he's not going to let me know whether i can move in until after the weekend cos he's got other people seeing the room. allegedly. but he's probably just weighing up whether i'm normal aswell. so, hopefully, that might work out. but there's a couple of other places as well to look at so, hopefully, i'll only be another week in the fawlty towers of a hostel i'm in. seriously, the place is a dump. the ecoli kitchen has birds flying about in there. and this morning the floor had a nice stickiness to it which made my flip flops squelch.
incidentally, i think flip flops are a great international conversation starter. in nz they're called jandals (in my top ten of favourite words) and in oz they're called thongs. it all makes 'flip flops' sound a bit of a silly word. so, top tip guys, wherever you are ask what they call flip flops in that country. is guaranteed to involve at least a 20 minute discussion involving much hilarity. i mean, imagine the sniggers when kylie in sydney announced that we were all heading to the bar but we weren't allowed to wear thongs...
so today i've having a look at some of the free exhibitions in the library before heading to work at the theatre. i'm loving the newness of having to be places at certain times, even though i know that that was part of what i was getting away from when i set out. it's funny how when you have been doing stuff for a while, you always crave the other. and then tomorrow i'm off to the grand prix! i don't know anything about motor racing but i'm going for my dad. am contemplating running onto the track during the race, waving a big 'hello dad' sign, but this will probably get me killed, so maybe not. but it promises to be a nice day out. there's a celebrity race, though it's a load of australian 'celebrities' so i won't have a clue who they are. i believe you can also get helicopter rides over the track. plus there's beer.
i also have to apologise to my auntie margaret for all the swearing that's been going on recently. sorry, auntie margaret. but the bints were reeeeaaally annoying. but now they're all really good in my room. i was actually last to go to bed the other night and it's also mainly me that wakes everyone up on a morning when i go to work aswell. there's probably another blog somewhere swearing and complaining about the northern lass that goes the bed late and then gets up really early and bangs about...
